What is role conflict?

Role conflict arises when an individual experiences incompatible demands stemming from two or more of their social statuses. This occurs when the expectations associated with these different roles clash, making it challenging for the individual to fulfill their obligations effectively. For example, a person who is both a parent and a full-time employee might struggle with the demands of meeting work deadlines while also attending to their child's needs.

The social statuses a person holds—such as being a student, employee, or caregiver—come with distinct sets of expectations. These expectations can sometimes overlap, creating tension and leading to stress for the individual as they navigate this conflict.
